Feedback and questions for our guest speakers

Hey All,

Since Kohl, Paco, Jordan and Richard have visited two of my three classes in the last week, here is a space to give them some feedback and thanks for their time, knowledge and energy, as well as possibly ask follow up questions or new ones that have occurred to you since their talks.

Also, Kohl has shared his blog with us: http://www.kohllaff.blogspot.com/ So, now we have another blog to post to for our weekly online work. Once again, I am hoping we can have conversations/discussions online as well as in person, and Kohl is a great person to have discussions with and he is a beautiful writer.

Jordan also shared his email if you want to learn more about body cameras: jladucer@stu.nwic.edu

You may also share any comments about Debora Pontillo's visit if you were in my ENGL& 102 class last week. Besides being a Founding Faculty at Cascadia, she is also a multi media artist, if you would like to see some of her work: http://www.deborabarrerapontillo.com/

It is such an honor and a pleasure to be able to learn with and from so many individuals who bring their academic/intellectual learning, their heart and their humanity to this work.

  2. This quarter is the first class that I’ve had where we have had guest speakers and I really enjoy it. When Debora came into our class I was so interested in her story and I love her personality. I definitely want to take one of her classes while I’m at Cascadia. It was incredibly brave of her to share the private and personal things that she did. I really appreciate her and I think her story is very inspiring. Something else about her that I admired was her sense of humor, when she would talk about something from her past and when she lived on the east side she would start a Latina accent, I loved her.

  3. I agree Debora is very inspiring. Her story reinforced to me that things can happen to for everyone, with a little support from people that care. It felt good to know she had such humanity. He story was especially inspiring to me because some of our hardships are alike. Debora is compassionate, artistic person with a victory story and I thank he for sharing. However, all the guys from Northwest Indian College were so funny and passionate about change, it was infectious. The had me laughing with their brutal honesty. Besides enjoying thier personalities it was good to talk about indigenous people today for a number of reasons. I also wanted to share that I have a feeling Khol is going to do some really great things in life.

  4. I really enjoyed having "the boys" come and speak in our class. Their point of view was somewhat new to me, and their passion was, as Crystal said, quite inspiring. While I didn't agree with everything they said and believe, I appreciate their desire for change (and do agree that a change needs to be made) and their willingness to be a huge part of making that change become a reality.

  5. I agree with both Hannah and Crystal. I really enjoyed hearing the boys from NWIC speak. I have gone through some struggles in my life and I feel as if I could relate to some of them. Coming to speak in class shows how passionate they are. I really learned a lot from them coming to class and loved their sense of humor. I hope they get a chance to come back for a follow up.

  6. I really appreciate those Indian who are from Indian Northwest College. They came here and talked about their culture. Actually as an international student, I did not know much about Indian culture. After listening they talked about their culture, I have some new opinions about Indians. Maybe a few years ago when Indians were young, they drank alcohol; but now they have changed. They seldom drink alcohol and go to the casino.

  8. I really appreciate our guests to speak to us, and let us know about Native Americans and their culture. And also the day Debora came to us share her own experience with us. I believe every in the class pay attention to their stories. Well, thanks for those Indians, they brought us more information about the Native Americans’ life nowadays, and they make changes along with moving forward of times.

  9. This class is the first class that I have taken that has guest speakers and I have only been there for two of them so far but I have really enjoyed them and learned a lot about going over seas to learn more. I think that it would be really neat to learn in another country and see how things are done differently. It would also give me a really big impact on my life to see how much more freedom we have and how much more relaxed our life is here then anywhere else. The other guest speaker I saw was the one about how to transfer colleges and that was really helpful information. I know that my high school deplomia won't matter after 40 college credits and that its better to drop a class then fail it. You want like a 3.0 gpa just for them to look at you and really consider you. Thank you to thoughs guest speakers I really appreciate what you have given me information on.

  10. Crystal,

Everything you said about Debora I can agree with. She is one amazing person. Even in that short period of time she came to visit, she made an impact. Have you seen her website with all of her work. It is really something else. She is a fabulous artist. You should look at it if you haven't.

I as well think that Kohl will do something great with his life. He seems driven.

  11. It was very interesting to listen to the perspectives of the guest speakers. They seemed very passionate about the topic of "diversity brings unity". What happened to their people was devastating, and the fact that they want to put that all behind them and start over really goes to show what kind of people they are. As others have stated i also didn't know a whole lot about indian cuture (other then the false portrayals of them in movies) And afterwords i had a better understanding about it. I am grateful for the time that they took out of they're lives to come and speak with us. I definitley began thinking about things i'd never thought about before after hearing them speak

  12. It was a breath of fresh air to see what we are learing right in front of us with their emotions, and there backgrounds. I found it interesting then they went into information about the hundread feather circle ceremony. I feel honored to be able to ask them questions, and not be worried about saying the wrong thing. they were very respectful, but at the same time confident in how they felt about touchy situations. all in all i enjoied the experiance, and it would be cool if we have another speech maybe with a few elders next time? either way i walked away n=more knowlegable about the problems Native Americans face every day.

  13. I really have enjoyed all the speakers we have had in class. Walt who was in class on monday was really full of information for my family. We have started going on some of the web sites he suggested as my husband is looking for work and my kids are getting to the age were they are going to be looking soon too. I can see hoe diversity does bring us together. and it is very comforting knowing there are others who understand. Thankyou for all your time and care.

  16. After Listening to the guest speakers, I thought they were very informative about things that we don't know and why different stereotypes still exist. Many if not all of which are untrue. There stories made them much more realistic in many ways. Especially about the American school across the highway as apposed to the all Indian school.

  18. I thoroughly enjoyed the guest speakers but mostly enjoyed Deborah's time in our classroom. I took her Art Appriciation class in the fall and I now not only have an apprication for art but for her as well. Her life story gives hope to so many people. I remember in my class with her she would always tell people to not let money be a problem for our projects and that if that was the case, she would find some way to help them. It makes sense now because she knows what it's like to not have money to follow her dream. She proves to us all that everyone can succeed in what they love, even if they think they are at a point in life that they never will.
